Thoughts on the Netherlands-Spain game.

The game was live 2:30am here in the Philippines, 8:30pm at Johannesburg, South Africa. I stayed up so late coz I’m really excited for this match. I’m rooting for Netherlands since the quarter-finals, where they beat Brazil. I know nothing of soccer, or the history of the teams that won the cup. All I know is Brazil won the title a lot of times, and it’s quite a big deal that Netherlands beat them. So the Dutch must be really really good this season.??

I just hate the final match between Spain and the Netherlands for a lot of reasons! Here are some things I totally hate about their match:

1. Spain’s goalie is REALLY REALLY GOOD!

Which sucks! Tsk tsk. The NED team was quite aggressive during the game, especially Arjen Robben, who almost kicked a goal twice and had a one-on-one encounter with Spain team’s goalie??Iker Casillas. ??I’m impressed though because almost every goal attempted by Netherlands was blocked and deflected by the said goalie. I was like, “Yes, this is it! Goal for NED”, and then that goalie blocked it, then I was “Uh, crap.”. He is really good! He’s also the captain of the Spanish “armada”, no wonder the score was 0-0 for almost 2 hours!

2. Netherlands got more yellow cards than goals. And oh, a red card too!

If you have seen the game, it was dirty! There was a lot of foul and protesting to the coach. And NED team managed to get most cards (9Y,1R) than Spain (5Y). That match also??broke the record for most yellow cards given on a final game in the history of World Cup. I just wished Netherlands focused more on kicking some goals, than hitting the enemies.??

3. The match was????ber long.

The game lasted for almost 2 hours, and Andres Iniesta??scored the goal at the 116th minute, 4 minutes before the end of the game. And in the Philippines, it was already 4:45 am when the goal was scored. Can you imagine watching the game that long, for almost 2 hours, and without even a single goal? When you try to stay awake just to keep up with the game. And in the end, Spain had that final goal, that winning goal? It sucks right?! I feel like I was up for two hours, trying to stay awake, for nothing. My team still didn’t win. Geez. If I believe in that octopus, I might as well just slept throughout the game and just googled in the morning. That way, I was less disappointed. Ugh!

4. And that friggin’ Paul the Octopus

Spain was also backed up by this “psychic” octopus from Germany that predicted the team to win the championship match. This mollusk became an internet sensation after predicting 8/8 winning matches, including the Spain-Netherlands game.

Here’s the video of that prediction:

??

I hate it because that octopus was actually right, and I really thought that its predictions were not that accurate, especially that last match. Argh, it’s so annoying! You know what will happen next? That octopus will be asked to predict a lot of things from now on, including what country will garner most medals in the upcoming Olympics, or on who will win the presidency on some friggin elections (if there’s any), or, if it comes to worst, that mollusk will be asked if the 2012 end-of-the-world will truly happen. If that’s what it is, then the world will become sooo paranoid! And I really really hope it doesn’t come to that. And I hope that Paul will be eaten soon. Please, cook the octopus now, it’ll make a tasty sizzling.

??

It was a good game though. One of the best games in the season. It was a tough fight between Spain and Netherlands. This must be really important for them since both of the teams haven’t got the title in the history of World Cup. No wonder no goals were scored until the 116th minute of the game. Both of them have good offense and defense strategies.

I salute the Netherlands for playing such a nice game (although they were quite harsh and dirty), and I’m still sooo proud of them! Kudos to Wesley Sneijder, van Brockhorst??and Robben. You played really well!??Ga naar Nederland!??

??

??

Netherlands, we still have 4 years to practice, and beat all the teams in the next World Cup. And I will still be rooting for you till the end! 😀
